Greatest Leaders from the past 100 years

Ran across an interesting list from Time (from 8 years ago) on who they ranked as the greatest 100 leaders of the last century (the list came out in 2000). So thought I would attempt to put together my own top ten greatest leaders list from the last 100 years. Here you go:

1. Martin Luther King

2. Ronald Reagan

3. Winston Churchill

4. Mother Teresa

5. Billy Graham

6. Franklin Roosevelt

7. Nelson Mandela

8. Walt Disney

9. Gandhi

10. Oprah Winfrey

Do you guys (and girls) agree? Who would you add or take off?

Looks like a great list to me! I would add Teddy Roosevelt for leaders; Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Annie Leibovitz, Ansel Adams, Pablo Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright and C. S. Lewis for keeping the arts alive and inspirational. There are a lot of other great and inspirational leaders out there as well as some that aren’t as famous either, especially those running our churches and ministries. I would say pastor Chuck and you, Tony, deserve as much credit for shaping the lives of the people in our community. By the way Oprah Winfrey scares me for some reason, not sure why haha, shes still a great and positive leader in the entertainment industry though.

Oprah is scary… she’s incredibly influential yet incredibly wrong in her spiritual proclamations… I’d have to add Michael Jordan to the list… the guy was the first to transcend sport and actually turn sport into a platform for world domination… till the baseball thing of course :)

If Oprah Winfrey is a great leader then so was Adolph Hitler, Joseh Stalin, Fidel Castro, and Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, etc. Because of their views I would never put them on a top ten even if they did have all the leadership skills. I would put General George S. Patton on that top ten though.

Rob interesting thought. Although evil and warped, all of the people you mentioned WERE great leaders (in the sense of the word, not in the cause they promoted) These guys all decieved nations into buying into ideological rhetoric that ultimately ended in the mass killing of many. Wonder what would have happened if a charasmatic public speaker like Hitler would have been a Christian and led a crusade of faith rather than of destruction.

I think Greg Laurie is an honorable mention on this list. Maybe not influental globally, but the Harvest Crusades has definitely made a huge impact on Southern California.

Its a nice list great leaders influence people to become like them. So I would take of Mother Theresa because I just don’t see millions of women running to the catholic church to become celibate girls. Great leaders influence a lot of people therefore just as Rob mentioned those that led “the wrong way” should be posted up here too. It is a presupposition to only include those who did great when the term great leader means to influence people into your thinking and lifestyle.

In Christ,

Jonathan Benjamin

I saw Missy put Babe Ruth as a Leader. That’s awesome. Did you know that during his career Babe Ruth struck out almost twice as many times as he hit homeruns? Babe Ruth wasn’t afraid of failure. He just failed his way to success. I believe if everyone had that mentality we would hit more homeruns. Sometimes we get afraid to step outside of our comfort zone and in doing so we miss out on the opportunities to hit a few out of the ball park. Anyways off subject but I think it is pretty interesting. I can almost bet that the rest of those leaders have failed more than any of us which made them much more successful in the long run.

Are you serious in including Oprah with Hitler and the rest of the crew you mentioned? I understand that some of the things she endorses may not line up with what you believe…but the last time i checked she was not involved in the genocide of an entire race of people. Her views on a “new earth” do not put her in the same category as Osama Bin laden. When is the last time that any of us built an entire neighborhood in New Orleans and a leadership academy for girls in Africa?

I have been trying to think of someone who deserves to be on that list and I cant think of anyone to take off to add Jordan. Jordan’s influence was so huge and still is and the NBA would love to find the next Jordan but that is not going to happen (thanks for nothing Kobe?).

Why are so many reacting to Oprah and not Gandhi, as if Gandhi was any better or different. Both are or were great influential leaders. Both have done tremendous good for the world around them but both leave out truth in all the good that they do. I am not saying that either are evil but why does Oprah’s mention sit wrong with everyone and Gandhi get a pass? Both of their spiritual beliefs do not line up with the Gospel.

Just thought the Oprah reaction is interesting.

I Would take out oprah and i and agree with ben & Dan!!! Reaplace us with Pastor Chuck & Tony!!! They are clearly way better leaders and very influential!!!

Dustin your right she’s not involved in genocide. Oprah is involved in eternal genocide. Putting yet another false religion on the market for people to get suckered into because of their own selfish desires. So yes I am putting her on the list of corrupt and dirty leaders. Whats worse, dying on this earth or dying eternally? I hope you get the picture.

I think the problem with the whole list is how are we defining “great”???

As a christian or other…..

As a Christian….I would take many of them off….for they did not lead me closer to Jesus!!!! Nothing “great” about someone not who is NOT for the KING OF KINGS!!!!!

i def would take opera off…she may have been a good leader but she is using her new spiritual guru to send people away from christ….i would add William Wilberforce….politician…who spent most of his life trying to get the slave trade to abolish not to mention good friends with a man named John Newton who was a slave trader and decided to devote his life to christ…there for giving us the song AMAZING GRACE…we can safely put john on there as well

Are you Anthony S from Wyoming sir?

My dear children, do not worry so much about why someone does not deserve to be on the list. If they are not the ideal leader in your opinion, remember they are still my child. Instead worry about how you can reach them, and show them the truth of My love
