Pussycat Generation

Raping the Innocence of Generation Z

Generation Z is everyone between 2001 to 2021. They are who your children’s ministry will strive to reach for the next two decades.

While it is difficult to forecast how Generation Z will evolve, I think we have enough data to predict that these children will have their innocence robbed at earlier ages and engage in sexual activities earlier and more often than previous generations.

THE POWER OF LYRICS
The University of Pittsburgh surveyed ninth-grade students and discovered:

Exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex was one of the strongest associations with sexual activity.

Compared to those with the least exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex, those with the most exposure were more than twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse. Similarly, among those who had not had sexual intercourse, those in the highest third of exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex were nearly twice as likely to have progressed along a noncoital sexual continuum compared to those in the lowest third.

GENERATION Y STATS
Currently, the United States has 750,000 teenage pregnancies each year.
One in four (25%) U.S. teen girls have sexually transmitted infections.

GENERATION Z TODAY
Obviously, pop lyrics have digressed from the days of the Beatles (i.e., “I wanna hold your hand.”) to the era of Beyonce (i.e., “I know you want my body. Tonight I’ll be your naughty girl”).

Many of today’s Generation Z kids already listen to mainstream pop music. In fact, 44% of UK parents sing their babies pop songs and TV theme tunes rather than nursery rhymes. And if they do not listen to provocative pop music yet, media conglomerates will package it to them and tell them to listen.

Look at the some of music nominees for Nickelodeon’s 2009 Kids’ Choice Awards:

  • Beyonce
“Now take it off while I watch you perform.” (Suga Mama)
  • Chris Brown
“Let’s get and make love on Venus.” (Gimme Whatcha Got)
  • Alicia Keys
“So maybe we can go to first base because I feel you.” (Teenage Love Affair)
  • Jesse McCartney
“Spend the night with me and I’ll rock you.” (Rock You)
  • Katy Perry
“I kissed a girl just to try it. I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it.” (I Kissed a Girl)
  • Pussycat Dolls
“I can get off when you ain’t around.” (I Don’t Need a Man)
  • Rihanna
“What you got up in them jeans? Put it on me, or get lonely.” (Lemme Get That)
  • Kid Rock
    “that little p**** l***** finger f***** h* a** c***.” (F*** U Blind)
  • T-Pain
“She was s***** on me. And I was l***** on her.” (69)

Considering a large part of Nickelodeon’s audience is Generation Z, the future looks rough for these kids, particularly those who are already listening to Kid Rock, T-Pain, the Pussycat Dolls, and Katy Perry.

Good blog Tony. I remember when I was working at KGGI back in the day and the big roar was when Two Live Crew’s “Me So Horny” was out.

Radio stations music director’s were questioning whether to play it and I think that was one of the first songs that really was raw sexulaity for the time.

Now its all about popularity and radio stations don’t care about making ethical questions like what influence is this going to have on the culture.

I was catching the effects when djing at elementary schools and little 2nd and 3rd graders asking for music that I couldn’t believe they had any knowledge of. It was a sad statement on society and parenting.

Its all about what sells and to the culture its sex.

this just kills me. knowing that this is what my little sister and soon my daughter will have to battle with everyday. i watched Hannah Montana for the first time the other day. I was almost in tears after 5 minutes seeing what DISNEY, DISNEY of all people were selling to our youth and its just the beginning.
Parents these days just hear o that’s Disney o that’s Nickolodean…kid friendly….my dear parents you have got it so so wrong. But I know God is bigger! And with things like GENERATE I know if we strive long and hard we will over come.

This is why Impact is such a needed ministry! I have heard stories of 13 year old girls with BABIES at Caleb’s cousin’s middle school in Riverside. This age was lost it’s innocence, we have to reach out to them, and unfortunately most parents have no idea. The kids choice awards kills me…

imo, our society in general concentrates too much on telling kids what to think instead of teaching them how to think. Schools, parents, the media, pitical and cultural leaders, etc., just repeat specific ideas they want compliance/non-compliance with: a list of.”goods and bads” that are to be followed, a specific type of clothes they are supposed to wear, what music to listen, and so on. But little attention seems to be given to teaching a child why something is good or bad, and what makes it so (the “because I said so” response doesn’t cut it)? How many parents teach their children the inherent flaw in using peer pressure as a decision model? Or the way the destructive instinct is employed in the marketing of everything and how it is often used fallaciously – like, there’s an absence of supermodel-like women in my life, and using new and improved tide with bleach with solve that problem! Not cool enough? Listen to this music and buy these shoes.

It would be nice if somewhere in adolescence parents (and the school system should, too) took some time to teach children critical thinking and reasoning.. Instead of just saying “sex is wrong” maybe try explaining it openly and honestly – in my opinion, if parents talked realistically and honestly about sex kids might not be so quick to learn about it from itunes. -nstead of just saying “don’t dress like Beyonce”, try explaining what the problem is with assuming that just because a band you like endorses something that its a good idea to do it as well. If we teach kids how to abstract general ideas out of specific situations, to understand what makes something right or wrong, they will be far better equipped to deal with the world then if we just let them loose with a list of do’s and dont’s.

I hate seeing what entertainment has become, and its sad that kids are so exposed to it, but the blame can’t be on the artists trying to make money, or on the radio stations trying to make money, its on the parents who let the kids get influenced by this. I’ve listened to worse than anything on that list, but I don’t let it affect my behavior, because my parents taught me what’s right and wrong, and the Bible tells me what’s right and wrong, and I was raised to select my role models wisely, and not be influenced by music and the media. The mainstream may have changed, but parents need to step up to the plate.

I think of all the postings I just read through there is one resonating emotion that tugs my heart and soul more than any. And that is a sense of heart break. I have such an incredible lose of words when it comes to the next generation’s chance at holiness that it makes me sick. Of course God is bigger than anything satan can through at us or our kids. But unfortunately we have the “blessing” of being able to choose. And with the enemy appealing to the deceitful heart and eyes of our flesh, the chances of our kids making the right choice are in danger. GRAVE danger. I dont even want to have kids now because I am so sickened by what they would be introduced to on this planet. If anything i would adopt that i might show the truth and light to a child already in danger of missing out on God’s grace and salvation. It is so sad that the world is more interested in making a few bucks than preserving the innocense of children. I feel like i want to say more about the sadness of it but dont know what to say. Its disgusting. My LITTLE SISTER, by statistics, is 50% liekly to have had sex already. Julie put it best. JESUS COME BACK PLEASE.

What can I say, this is a great post. The only question I would have is why does it have to be that way? Keep up the good work.
